The National Occupational Standards are the foundation of the CMCP and form the basis for workforce development, driving curriculum development within educational institutes, and the alignment of company training programs. They establish clear, objective benchmarks of the skills and knowledge required for workers to perform proficiently in a particular occupation.

MiHR develops and maintains the suite of NOS for the Canadian mining sector. The development and maintenance of each NOS is led by a stakeholder committee called the National Occupational Standard Development Committee (NOSDC) which is made up of subject-matter experts from various groups across Canada, including industry, labour, and education.
